An employee's guide to payslips


The BCS Payroll Team process monthly payrolls for a wide range of clients and on average prepare around 1,000 payslips every month.   We receive various queries from employees and where employers outsource their payroll to service providers. such as BCS. they may not have in-house expertise to answer queries.  Some of the most common queries relate to why an employee’s tax code or the amount of tax paid has changed and to what the terminology used on a payslip means.


In respect of tax code and payment queries, employers and service providers are not usually able to answer these as changes are linked to an employee’s personal circumstances and financial affairs.  Therefore, employees are advised to contact HMRC directly to understand the reasons for a change.


However, in respect of terminology, following industry research from the Chartered Institute of Payroll Professionals (CIPP) reporting that as many as 1 in 5 employees do not understand their payslips, the PayDashboard platform compiled a guide on payslip terms.
